Nov 19, 2020 Right-click on the Facebook app. Click on “Make Alias”. The Finder will now create a copy of the Facebook app. Drag the Facebook icon you’ve just created to your Desktop. Introduction
Facebook chat and messages allow you to communicate privately with your friends on Facebook. Unlike the other things you share on Facebook, such as status updates or photos, chats and messages will not be shared with all of your friends or posted on your Timeline.
This lesson will mostly focus on the desktop version of Facebook. If you're using a mobile device, you'll need a separate app called Facebook Messenger to send chats and messages.

Facebook chat
You can communicate in real time with your friends using Facebook chat. Also known as instant messaging, this is a popular way to communicate online. Multiple slack accounts ios.
If you've never used an instant messaging client before, you may want to review our lesson on chat and instant messaging from our Beyond Email tutorial to learn the basics.
Using the Facebook chat:
- Locate and select the chat box in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- A list of friends who are currently available to chat will appear. Select an available friend.
- A chat window will appear. Type your message, then press Enter. Your conversation will appear in the chat window.
- When you're finished, click X to close the chat window or press Esc on your keyboard.
Sending messages with the Messages tab
You can also send messages to Facebook friends via the Messages menu. This can be an easier way to find people if they're offline or if you're having trouble finding them in the chat box.
To send a message:
- Locate and select the Messages icon at the top of the screen, then select New Message.
- A message window will appear. Type the name of the person you want to message, and a list of suggested friends will appear as you type. You can click a suggestion to add a friend to the message.
- Type your message. When you're done, press Enter to send it.
You can also send messages to your friends directly from their Timelines. Simply click the Message button on a friend's Timeline to start a new message.
To go offline:
Some people do not want to be available for chat while on Facebook. You can hide your online status by going offline.

- In the chat box, click the gear icon, then select Turn Off Active Status.
- A window will appear, allowing you to choose which of your contacts can see you as active. Select the option you'd like, then click Okay.
- Your status will change to offline. Click Turn on Active Status to go online again.

The Messenger is where you'll read all ofyour private communication on Facebook, including your chat conversation history. Whenever you receive a new message or chat, it will appear in the Messenger. From here, it's easy to read, manage, and delete your chats.
To access your inbox, click the Messages icon, then select See All in Messenger. The Messenger will appear.

If you're using a mobile device, you won't be able to send or receive messages within the Facebook app. Instead, you'll need to download and install the Facebook Messenger app. Sending and receiving messages in this app works mostly the same way as it does on the desktop: You can use it for instant messaging and for sending messages to friends who are offline.

Facebook’s web chat has always had issues and thus a lot of us usually look for desktop chat clients to catch up with their Facebook friends. Facebook hasn’t been sitting idle though. In order to counter this, it launched its official desktop messenger few months ago to make the chatting experience better. People seemed to have liked it, with many saying that it’s better than its web counterpart.
Personally speaking, I am not a fan of Facebook chat. With contenders like Skype and Gtalk, Facebook chat always seems to fall behind. Apart from chat however, Facebook has become a necessary part of my life. It has become easy as hell to check on with friends, view their snaps, schedule events. Likewise, for others, may be the chat part of it has become integral to their Facebook experience.

As the name speaks, Facebook Desktop Messenger is a simple desktop chat client (Windows only), but it does not stop there. It also provides new notification, message and friend alert system along with real-time event updates.
Downloading and installing the messenger is very simple, for the first time you run the messenger it will ask you to enter your Facebook login credential. In my case however, it automatically detected the logged in profile in Chrome and logged me in.
Facebook Messenger looks like the side bar in the browser view. It has the real-time event updates at the top along with the friend list to the bottom, but that was not what I was interested in. The notification bar across the top drew my attention. Now with the messenger I can get the notifications right on my desktop.

The messenger provides all the notification updates instantly and clicking on them will open the page in your default browser.
Now, as I already told above that I am not a fan of the Facebook chat and thus staying offline was also one of the top priorities, it was easily taken care of in the desktop messenger. Click on the settings button at the bottom if the messenger and select Go Offline from the menu.

That’s all, You can now get Facebook updates directly on your desktop and that too without the fear of appearing available for chat. Furthermore, as we are using an official Facebook tool, I don’t think you should be concerned about privacy issues.
